Statement regarding the situation in Israel and Palestine

I’ve been following what’s been happening in the southern settlements of Israel, as well as in the Gaza Strip. Hamas has declared war on Israel, in what they call a “military operation to defend Al-Aqsa”. As a result, dozens of Israeli citizens have been kidnapped and killed.

I have been a vocal supporter for Palestinian rights, and boycotts of Israel, via the BDS-movement. I have on numerous occasions opposed the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory, and their intent to expand their annexation of Palestinian land. But the pure terror and brutality that Hamas has inflicted on Israeli citizens, including women and children, is inexcusable. I sincerely hope that other advocates for Palestinian rights can join me in seeing through the barriers between Israelis and Palestinians, and condemn these evil acts, without question or hesitation.

This is not just an attack on Israel, but it’s also an attack on Palestinians, who will pay the higher price as a result.

As I’m writing this, the Israeli government is preparing an official declaration of war. According to reports, a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip is on the table. I sincerely hope it does not come to that, but I’m not optimistic.

What we are witnessing is the beginning of yet another brutal and dark chapter in this conflict, and my fear is that it may in the long run, have catastrophic consequences for Israelis and Palestinians alike. A peaceful solution, where Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side, seems further away than ever, and that breaks my heart…
